Surah Al Imran Print

Canary Wharf Muslim Association [WharfMA] Presents:

AN EXPLANATION OF SURAH AL ‘IMRAN

with Ustadh Hafiz Abdullah Muhammad*

Date: Tuesday 27th July 2010
Time: 6pm - 9pm
Venue: Idea Store Canary Wharf, Churchill Place,
Canary Wharf, London E14 5RB

Surah Aal Imran is an early Madinan Surah consisting of 200 verses.  It is a
complement of the previous Surah al-Baqarah and together they are described
as the ‘Two Shining Lights’ (al-Zahrayaan) and begin with Alif Lam Meem.
The name is taken from v.33 and refers to Imran, his wife Hannah, daughter
Maryam and grandson Isa (AS).  Interestingly, the Surah does not mention
anything about the man after whom the chapter is named.  In fact, the
focus is on the two women of Imran- his wife and daughter.

The main theme of the Surah is remaining steadfast upon Islam, the only
way of life acceptable to God, as demonstrated by the lives of two women
from the ‘Family of Imran’.  It recounts the mistakes made by the People
of the Book and warns Muslims, who have been entrusted with this new
mission as the ‘Best of Nations’ (Khayr Ummah), not to fall into the
same traps.  Whilst the previous Surah focused on the Jews, this Surah
concentrates on the Christians and invites them to accept the truth of
the Qur’an in the context of a dialogue that took place with a
Christian delegation from Yemen in 9AH.

After a brief mention of the Victory at the Battle of Badr (2AH), eighty
verses are devoted to the lessons to be learnt from the fatal losses Muslims
suffered at the Battle of Uhud (3AH).  Muslims are told to ‘Hold fast to
the Rope of Allah’ and not to be divided.  They have been warned to guard
against all internal and external elements which will cause their downfall.
The Surah concludes with the longest series of Du’as in the Qu’an and with
a command to persevere and enjoin others to do the same and “Fear Allah so
you may be successful”.
